Hey flimsundass gang,
Where are you all? Can we start sharing "film-making" experiences please, however sundassy? Ashu and Sandeep, you've used our camera a lot. And had a problem with it. Could share that.
Okay, I'll start. I've shot some stuff for a short docu I'm planning to make. Probably call it 'Under the Skin'. It's about how this hairdresser Smita gets a tatoo. Basically, how "personal" it is, both for her and for the tatoo artist, Savio. Since I've been logging the footage, I'll tell you a bit about it.
I interviewed Smita about what getting the tatoo means to her. Decent interview, but she speaks very softly, so lots of it, I found, is not going to be usable in the edit. The mistake I made was, although I went close so that the camera mike might pick up her voice, she had some music playing already at her place. Of course I should have asked her to turn it off, but she was jittery and I wanted her to be comfortable...
I got a good interview of Savio, the tatoo artist. Also, shots of his workspace and home. Then Smita's workspace and home. Nice mood, I feel. Lots of what I've shot is mid-shot and CU. The home shots are also tight because, well, you know mumbai houses - all passage and low ceilings! But appropriate to the idea of "personal" and "under the skin".
I need good music, because both listen to rock a lot. So i think, that for the soundtrack. I also want to get shots of Savio swimming. He swims regularly... plus I get to see him in his trunks!!!
Wish me luck on the edit. if anyone has any suggestions, please post... Artists - Podu and Ashu - any ideas on transitions between shots? I don't know anything beyond dissolve and fade in fade out, and jump cuts. Can't figure whether to play with this or stick to simple cuts.
May the Force be with You (and whoever has the camera, give it back to me soon).

Hey that's way too cool Chatura. In fact a female hairdresser getting a tattoo on her bum sounds like a great idea. You never mentioned bum but I get it. A guy drilling a wound on a woman's bum(isn't that what tattoo is supposed to be) or is there a larger meaning to it sounds like real fun. Have you gotten the censor certificate for this. I am eagerly looking forward to this adult documentary directed by Chatura Rao.
ReplyDeleteWhat kinda music? Hmm I would suggest "suggestive music" from tamil films in the background to go with the mood of the drilling tattoo machine.
As for tight shots, well, tighter to the bum, better the shot:)))
Well, all this in good humour since i am in bangalore sitting in a cybercafe passing time till my bus to trivandrum arrives.
On a serious note, all the best chatura, and keep Sundassing!
late to sundass but better late than never.....
ReplyDeletethe tatoo thing sounds superb....
ReplyDeleteyellow boots shooting started....great to be around a movie being shot on HD...would love to see it take shape and then on to the big screen...
if it works good for us too...cuts big on the budget...and that long debate with ASHU....whats so special about film????...where Sandeep and Me kept on gushing about film and sidelining digital.....let me see if my faith and romanticism with film is lost or what with this movie.
he ha ha. well, tragedy it is Vasan that your vision shall be pixelated.
ReplyDeleteAm uploading another film soon, watch and tell pls. Will do a seperate post on how badly our new camera sucks. No, that's too harsh perhaps, its a sweet little thing with limited capabilities, just like me. he he.
Chatura, maybe you can read that one and see if it helps you...although, with lightning speed, you're done with your film before i can answer....
Welcome aboard Vasan!
ReplyDeleteSounds like great times man. Being around a project being shot in HD. Do post a bit more details about the camera being used pal. Also the rentals:) Do you guys watch the rushes right there every hour or like with film stock, at the end of the day? Was HD a choice necessitated by the budget or did the concept ask for it? Is HD friendly for shoulder-held shots(I think it's not, but want to hear it from you since you are experiencing it first hand!). I have a feeling if there's enough "shock-material" in the story, then people won't spot the difference between the formats. Also script is king, not formats, right. What do you say?!
Chatura seems to have gone underground after finishing 2 shorts
Anubhuti, I heard is acting in this film which Vasan is talking about, and we all would want to hear from the actress herself what she feels about this opportunity. Ashu, Vasan, Chatura, Poddu, I hope you second that:)
